Physiotherapy after breast cancer

Physiotherapy after breast cancer for swelling, cording, scars, tissue firmness, muscle tension and restricted shoulder movement.

My approach to your care

Through my own experience of breast cancer, I also understand many challenges from a patient’s perspective. I support you with specialist knowledge, attentiveness and understanding of your personal situation.

Gentle therapeutic touch at the chest and shoulder

How I support you.

Swelling and lymphoedema

The breast, chest, arm or hand may swell after breast surgery, lymph node removal or radiotherapy. For lymphoedema, I also support appropriate compression fitting, such as an arm sleeve and hand garment where needed.

Cording and restricted movement

Cording can cause pulling, pain and restricted shoulder or arm movement. I combine gentle tissue techniques with mobilisation and suitable exercises, respecting tissue tolerance. Cording / AWS treatment.

Breast reconstruction with implants or your own tissue

After breast reconstruction with an implant or your own tissue, scars, tissue tension and restricted movement are often key concerns. I offer individually dosed scar and fascial therapy alongside adapted movement, also considering scars and symptoms at any donor site. Scar treatment begins only once wounds are fully closed and healed, with clearance from your care team. Lymphological treatment may complement care if swelling is present. Newly transferred tissue is protected; whether and when local lymphatic drainage is appropriate depends on healing and the surgical team’s instructions.

Scars and tissue changes

Surgical scars and tissue changes after radiotherapy can feel sensitive or tight and restrict movement. I assess how freely the skin, scar and underlying connective tissue layers, the fascia, move against each other. Carefully dosed tissue mobilisation and stretching techniques are combined with shoulder movement and self-care exercises. Wound healing, skin response and tissue tolerance guide care; local scar work starts only once the wound is fully closed.

Your treatment

More about your treatment.

As individual as your treatment history.

I know that swelling, scars and restricted movement can affect much more than what is visible. Side effects of medication can also change how the body feels and affect daily life. I therefore combine clinically grounded treatment with a particular understanding of my patients' individual needs.

How does treatment work?

Assessment before choosing treatment measures.

01

Understand the context

Review procedures, stage of healing, symptoms and personal goals.

02

Treat

Lymphological care, scar and fascial therapy, mobilisation and exercise are combined according to your findings. If lymphoedema requires decongestion, compression bandaging is used in an intensive phase. Fitted compression and self-care then help maintain the result in the maintenance phase.

03

Support

Teach compression and practical self-management. A personal exercise programme with videos and clear instructions is available through an app.

04

Adapt

Reassess function, swelling and how your body feels over time.

Potential benefits

Regain function. Reduce symptoms.

Depending on the starting point, treatment can reduce swelling and tension, improve shoulder movement and gradually restore everyday function.
